Our first lecture in the "Summer Conversations" series was attended by about 60 people, although the evening was cool. Nantucket resident, Keith Bergman presented some outstanding photographs illustrating man's impact on our global environment. He used the analogy of an orange: if we were to paint a layer of farnish on this orange, that thin layer of varnish represents the atmosphere surrounding the earth. The composition of this atmosphere affects life as we know it. Carbon dioxide is now recognized as a major contributor to the earth's rising temperature. This will have major impacts on our children and the tenerations that follow them. Are we willing to make the necessary changes in our life style now to help the people that follow us to have sustainable a future?
A lively question and answer session followed.
We look forward to our next lecture on Thursday, June 28 at 6:30 PM at the Apponegansett Meetinghouse in South Dartmouth. Veteran Washington lobbyist Ned Stowe will provide an inside glimpse into the way climate change is being viewed on Capitol Hill. He will discuss prevailing attitudes in both parties, how they are evolving, and what legislative options are on the horizon.
