A Single Pot of Beans

Update on Kakamega
It was seven years ago that Maine Quaker Women, Molly Duplisea, Sharon Salmon and Sukie Rice met Dorothy Selebwa and decided to make a seven-year commitment to support the work of Dorothy in her efforts to help orphan children.

A simple pot of beans and a feeding program in 2002 led to the construction of a dining hall and kitchen in 2003, then bedrooms which were built in 2004, and finally the Kakamega Orphan Care Center was complete in January, 2005 when the first 35 children moved in.

Now in 2009, there are 50 children living at the Care Centre (30 girls and 20 boys) with their "expanded families", loving care and the ability to go to school.

And there are now almost 100 home-based sponsored children living with guardians who are receiving essential support through the Sponsorship Program. Amazingly, the High School Sponsorship Program has also grown from one girl in 2004 to 28 girls and boys in 2009.
