New England Yearly Meeting

Yearly Meeting begins on Saturday, August 3rd at Wheaton College in Norton. Registration begins at 10:00 am. Dinner is at 5 pm, Opening Session is at 6:45 pm . The keynote address is at 7:45 and will be given by Tom Hamm, The Messy History of the Peace Testimony: Some Lessons from the Quaker Past. Peter recommends the Sunday schedule as being particularly interesting. He will be driving up every day. Please see him if you want a ride. ( He promises to drive carefully.) The complete calendar of events for the rest of the week is posted on the Bulletin Board in the front entry way.

We all enjoyed Ralph Greene’s visit, we look forward to seeing him again. He will be teaching a 3 day work shop at Yearly Meeting: Journey from the Tree of Knowledge to the Tree of Life.

Gardening for God

If your garden suddenly begins to produce more vegetables than you can handle, (not likely unless we get lots of rain) please bring the excess to Meeting . Betsy A will deliver the produce to Market Ministries. Can’t wait until Sunday? Call her.

Busy Fingers

We all know about the devil and idle hands, so keep them busy making items for the Craft Table, anything you can make is acceptable. Time is running out.

Organ

The Organ Search Committee presented their findings to Monthly Meeting suggesting one of two selections. Monthly Meeting enthusiastically approved of purchasing the Roland Organ which both Gordon and Sharon have seen. They are pleased with it, especially Sharon, because at the “flip of a switch” it performs like a piano. We are eagerly anticipating the arrival of this organ. Thoughts of an old fashioned hymn sing arise .(Peter promised not to sing—or did he threaten to sing?!) After the organ arrives, all members are asked to keep an eye on the Meeting House to make sure Gordon’s car is not parked outside, 24/7. In his excitement over a brand new organ, he might lose track of time while he practices. Anyone wishing to make a donation, should contact Dick M.

Campaign of Conscience

Monthly Meeting agreed to table the discussion of the Campaign of Conscience. It was felt that members were not well enough informed on the subject. As mentioned in the July Newsletter , Peace and Social Concerns Committee is proposing that Allen’s Neck support the AFSC’s work of the Campaign of Conscience for the Iraqi people in building small water treatment plants to provide clean water to the hospitals and civilians of Iraq. Many of us have questions - How will the materials be sent? Who really gets the money? Will the water kits reach the right people? Isn’t this illegal? Melissa Elliot, the Program Associate for Iraq of the AFSC will be here August 18th at 10:30, to answer these questions. Please join us and learn more about this important issue.
