First Day School Field Trip
| On Sunday, March 6, Stan led the First Day School on a visit to Triple S Farm on Horseneck Road in Westport. Triple S is a livestock farm associated with Sylvan Nursery. We met farm manager Darrin and his son Nate at the large barn. It had a pleasing hay and animal smell with overtones of manure aroma to it. |

Inside we saw a flock of Rhode Island Red chickens, many rabbits, very large pigs lying on their sides, a soon to calve Black Angus cow, and a gigantically huge Black Angus bull that we were glad was chained. He seemed a little anxious and angry that we were all in his barn, somewhat frightening, but Darrin told us he is actually quite friendly. (We werent sure we believed him.) |

After petting and talking to all the inside animals we trudged out in the still deep snow to see more livestock. Livestock meaning that these animals are raised for food.

| There are over 20 Beefalo and Angus cows, heifers and calves grazing outside. Darrin told us that when they arent eating fresh grass in the pasture that they are fed corn silage, hay and grain. |

The children looked up into the round silo and asked Darrin why it was empty. He told us that there are now much easier ways of storing silage, that getting the cut corn up into and out of the tall silo is very labor intensive. Our trip ended far too quickly and as we headed back to Meeting we all hoped that we would be able to return and see some newly born calves very soon. |
