MEMORIAL MINUTE FOR
VIRGINIA SHERMAN (BORDEN) MORRISON
Virginia S. Morrison was born on July 13, 1921 and died on September 19th, 2005 at the age of 84.
Virginia was an active member of Allens Neck Friends Meeting all of her life. As a child, she attended worship and First Day School with her mother and sisters every Sunday. She participated in the Young Friends Fellowship group in her youth, continuing into her adult years when the same group evolved into an adult fellowship group. She also attended Quarterly and Yearly Meetings.
Over more than eight decades, Virginia served the Meeting in many ways. She taught First Day School childrens classes, inspiring her students to read the Bible and strive to live up to its ideals. She served as Assistant Clerk (which we now call Recording Clerk) whenever she was needed. She also served on the Building and Grounds Committee. She helped to sew new pew cushions many decades ago, and also the new drapes which were installed in the Meetinghouse in 1982. She helped to deliver our Meetings newsletters for several years. She also helped the community by driving people to Monthly Meetings and to worship, when they would have otherwise been unable to attend.
Virginia participated in our annual Clambake every year. She assisted her husband Wilfred Morrison as bake master in the pre-clambake weeks. She steamed brown bread, baked for the food table, and baked pies for the bake. On the day of the bake she helped to do a lot of cooking in the Meetinghouse kitchen.
But by far the greatest influence Virginia had, in our Meeting and in the wider community, was in her work as Librarian. She served on our Library Committee for many years, finding new and great books to help our children and adults to want to keep reading and learning more. She helped our First Day School teachers to find books and other materials for their classes. She was an unofficial historian, collecting files of historical information about Allens Neck Meeting and the many people connected to it.
Virginia will always be remembered for the way she cared about other people. Her nurturing spirit will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and everyone who knew and loved her.
